Oyster Farm Visit

On the 14^th of July 2026 the SAMOS Students visited the Knysna Oyster Farm as per the Blue Economy elective module lectured by Dr Matthew Farthing (Rhodes University), Dr Alex Winkler (Rhodes University), Prof. Cliff Jones (Rhodes University), Chris Bova (Rhodes University), Associate Prof. Niall Vine (Fort Hare University). During this visit the students witnessed how an oyster farm operates, from how the oysters are cultivated, monitored, stored and packaged for marketing. The main purpose for the trip was for the students to witness how marine resources can sourced out sustainably. They were then tasked with formulating their own ventures that made use of marine uses in a sustainable way either through Aquaculture, Fisheries or Ecotourism.
